Christensen: We are Living The Capitalist's Dilemna
Link Here
Here is my summary of Christensen's 30 minute interview at Davos:

There are three kinds of capitol:
  1. Empowering (Disruptive) Capitol ...  creates jobs as longer term investments are made in people and ideas (longer term investments and return)
  2. Sustaining Capital .... no change in jobs because new products and services replace old ones
  3. Efficiency Capital ... reduce jobs because new ways are developed to reduce need for employees (short term investment and return)
Result of Efficiency Capital investments is emancipation of capitol. In an ideal world that freed up capitol would be used to make the longer term investments of Empowering Capitol.

Unfortunately, US CEO's have been feeding it back into efficiency which gives short term return, looks good on the balance sheet... and slowly drives the company into stagnation and eventual failure.

Major cause was business schools. They taught the three kinds of Capitol but didn't get across the need for a situational context.  When the process pushes the cost of capitol down near zero, that is the time to make longer term investments in people and ideas. Those are the investments that create the next wave of growth.

Recommendation: Change tax on capitol to make it more beneficial to use it for long term investments.  Teach a common language to frame the situation properly. Christensen's final recommendation on how US Congress could be engaged in this was most interesting: He basically recommended creating a dual structure to Congress made up of 100 individuals with influence on the congress. Then teach this to the parallel group and turn them loose to influence congress.  Somewhat Kotteresque
